Southeast Asia is seeing significant investments in the pet food sector with new factories opening in Thailand and Indonesia over the last few weeks.

Nestle’s new plant in Thailand

Nestlé for starters has opened a USD 147 million pet food plant in Rayong province, Thailand to produce wet pet food for local and export markets. This will also increase Purina’s presence in the cat food market.

Nestlé said the factory would contribute to revenue and profit growth while strengthening Thailand’s position as a production hub for pet food. Victor Seah, Chairman and CEO of Nestlé Indochina, said Thailand offers easy access to high-quality raw materials and is logistically convenient to supply products across Asean.

Nestlé with the grand opening of its new pet food plant, hopes to expand the reach of its Purina brand in the region.

Nutricell opens new plant in Pasuruan

Indonesia’s Nutricell Pacific in the meantime will set up a new pet food plant in Pasuruan Industrial Estate Rembang (PIER), East Java. The plant, costing USD 7 million, will produce 200,000 cans of wet cat and dog food.

“Last year, we acquired a pet food plant in Sidoarjo that was not in the industrial estate. We decided to build the new facility in PIER because it is strategically located and infrastructure-ready,” CEO Suaedi Sunanto told Asian Agribiz. Construction will begin in June with operations targeted for mid-2023.

According to Alltech’s 2022 Agri-Food Outlook, pet food was the fastest growing sector within the feed industry. Pet food grew 8.2% between 2020 and 2021. The highest growth for the pet food sector in 2021 came from the Asia Pacific region at 17.1%.
