FMCG commitments drive Malaysia’s cage-free egg growth

Demand for cage-free eggs in Malaysia is expected to grow as more hotels and food companies adopt sourcing commitments and domestic supply expands. According to Lever Foundation, more than 25 hotel chains in the country have committed to sourcing cage-free eggs.

“We foresee that the number of companies in Malaysia that set a 100% cage-free policy will continue to grow over the next three years as the supply of cage-free eggs increases,” said Fiona Foo, Sustainable Supply Chain Manager at Lever Foundation.

She told Asian Agribiz that equipment costs remain a hurdle for Malaysian producers considering a shift to cage-free systems. She expects this pressure to ease as equipment suppliers such as Big Dutchman, Facco, and Vencomatic localize aviary systems in Asia.

“More and more local equipment suppliers have started to offer large-scale cage-free egg production systems,” Ms Foo said. Greater equipment availability could support further expansion of cage-free production as corporate demand develops.
