Malaysia pioneers fish feed from Azolla plant

A Malaysian professor is pioneering using the Azolla plant in fish pellets to alleviate the high cost of conventional fish feed. Associate Professor Dr Risyawati Mohamed Ismail from Universiti Utara Malaysia said there are many distinct species of the plant “with a significant amount of unrealized potential for application. I’m producing feed pellets made from the aquatic fern and currently preparing for field tests.” She will collaborate with catfish farmers in the Kedah state to test the pellets.
