The first day of Asian Agribiz’s Layer Feed Quality Conference 2022 was led by Matthew Clark, Principal, The Feed Guys, and focused on maintaining productivity with alternative ingredients.
Layers must consume coarse and fine feed particles
Although layers have preference for coarse feed particles, they must consume both coarse and fine feed particles daily to ensure a balanced nutrient intake, said Mubarak Ali, Evonik Senior Technical Service Manager (Poultry and Dairy). If the birds over-consume coarse feed particles, they generally have a high energy intake and a low intake of other important nutrients, such as crystalline amino acids and vitamins. Also, if the birds are fed too often or in excessive amount, they are not encouraged to eat the fine feed particles. Due to the inconsistent nutrient intake, the birds would have problems with egg production and eggshell quality.
Size, distribution of feed particles keys for optimal layer feed
Feed particles with geometric mean size of 900-1000 μm, and its correct distribution are key for optimal layer feed, said Dr Ali. In addition, coarse and homogenous feed structure is the basis for good and even feed (nutrient) intake, GIT development, and performance. “Coarse particles are achieved through the grinding process of grains. Coarse grinding also saves energy and feed production cost. Meanwhile, optimal particle size distribution can be evaluated by sieve analysis,” he explained.
