The Layer Feed Quality Conference is going virtual, with three sessions, each three-hours long, to be streamed over three consecutive Wednesdays on 11, 18, 25 May 2022. The program will drill down on the three pressing issues facing the layer industry in Asia: Setting up layers for a profitable mid- to late-lay; Maintaining productivity with alternative ingredients; and Turning a profit as ingredient prices rise.

SESSION LEADER – Matthew Clark

Mr Clark graduated in Agriculture from London University and has since focused mainly on projects in the feed and farming business in SE Asia. He concurrently worked on the development, sales and implementation of formulation systems starting with the Brill Corporation in Atlanta as Vice President of Product Development in 1990 and continued in that role as a distributor and consultant for Brill Formulation Systems. He is a founding member of Genesis Feed Technologies, based in Fargo, North Dakota. Genesis develops software solutions for operational planning to enhance feed formulation systems and enable optimized purchasing decision making.

Tony Edwards is an animal nutritionist based in Australia. He established his own consulting business, ACE Livestock Consulting Pty Ltd in 1994. He currently services a wide client base across a broad spectrum of livestock species, including laying hens, throughout Australia, New Zealand and Asia, providing feed formulation, technical support, presenting seminars and training workshops.
Alternative feed ingredients and the importance of ‘crude protein’ in layer diets
Peter Chrystal, Nutritionist, Complete Feed Solutions, Australia/New Zealand
Mr Chrystal completed his Bachelor of Science in South Africa under Professor Rob Gous and is completing a PhD in poultry nutrition at the University of Sydney investigating reduced protein diets in broiler chickens. He has extensive commercial experience in both monogastric feeds and vitamin and trace mineral premix manufacture. He has worked as a nutritionist for the largest poultry integrators in South Africa, New Zealand, and Australia. He is currently working as a monogastric nutrition consultant and broiler/pig financial modelling expert and is based in Sydney.
Milling challenges presented by alternative ingredients
Charles Stark, Professor in Feed Technology, Kansas State University, USA
Dr Stark is the Jim and Carol Brown Professor in Feed Technology at Kansas State University. Dr. Stark received his degrees in animal sciences and grain science at Kansas State University. Before joining K-State he was an assistant professor in the Prestage Department of Poultry Science at North Carolina State University for seven years. Dr Stark also spent 12 years in the animal feed industry with responsibilities in feed manufacturing, quality assurance, and plant operations. Over the course of his career, he has published 45 journal articles, 7 extension bulletins, 4 book chapters, and 102 abstracts.

Optimal particle size and distribution in layer feed to optimize gut health and performance
Mubarak Ali, Senior Technical Service Manager (Poultry and Dairy), Evonik, Singapore
Mubarak Ali obtained PhD degree in animal nutrition from Wageningen University and Wageningen UR Livestock Research Centre, The Netherlands. After PhD, he joined Institute of Animal Sciences, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, Pakistan as Assistant Professor. He completed research projects on different aspects of poultry and ruminant nutrition. In 2016, he joined Evonik Animal Nutrition in Singapore as a Senior Technical Service Manager. He is providing technical support for Evonik products and services. He is collaborating with nutritionists, formulators, and consultants for establishing the modern and applied concepts in animal nutrition to support sustainable and profitable livestock farming.
How to manage potentially contaminated alternative
Arnau Vidal, Global Technical Manager – Toxins and Stress, Innovad Group, Belgium
Dr Vidal worked in the reduction of mycotoxins in the feed chain during his PhD (Lleida University, Spain). After his PhD in 2017, he started a postdoctoral project in Ghent University (Belgium) funded by FWO (Flemish Research Foundation). The project was focused on the toxic impact of mycotoxins in humans and animals and the validation of new mycotoxin biomarkers. As result of his research career, he has published more than 30 articles in international scientific journals.

He worked in San Miguel Foods Inc for six years before going into private practice. Currently, he is a freelance animal nutrition consultant of various farms and feedmills in the Philippines. He has been invited as a resource speaker in various technical conference both locally and abroad. He also conducts technical, feed formulation and sales trainings for various companies in the Philippines.

Dr Arantes received a degree in Animal Science from the Universidade Julio de Mesquita Filho and a MBA from the Instituto Didatus in Campinas in Brazil. Prior to joining Hy-Line in 2013, Dr Arantes worked as the Technical Coordinator for Uniquímica where his responsibilities included health management and nutrition recommendations, technical support and new product development.
Alternative methods of feeding laying hens

After working in pig production, and then as a senior nutritionist for Rivalea for 12 years, Dr Cadogan joined Feedworks in 2003 as the Technical Services Manager developing nutritional solutions to enhance efficient growth and health of monogastrics. David completed a Masters and PhD at the University of New England, and has over 40 papers published in peer reviewed journals and over 60 papers in conference proceedings, in the areas of NSP fibre digestion, enzyme applications, amino acid nutrition and general digestive physiology.

Dr Wu joined Kemin Industries (Asia) Pte Ltd in 2019 and his current role is to oversee the marketing and business advancements of animal nutrition platform. He obtained his bachelor’s degree of animal science from Nanjing Agricultural University followed by a master’s degree of animal nutrition & feed technology from the same university. Dr Wu received his PhD in animal nutrition from University of New England (Australia). He has published more than 20 papers in peer reviewed journals and international conference proceedings, and has strong interest and unique opinions in feed enzyme technology, monogastric animal nutrient metabolism, net energy and heat increment etc.

Dr Li holds a PhD in Ruminant Physiology and Nutrition and Master degree in Poultry Nutrition; she has over twenty-one years’ research and commercial experience across poultry, swine, ruminant, aqua nutrition and production and more than 40 refereed papers under her name. Dr Li has five-year researching and teaching experience at University of New England, Australia as a lecturer/researcher in animal nutrition and production. Recently she has gained commercial feed industry experience as a senior technical manager with multi-national companies in the Asia Pacific region.

He joined Novus Europe in 2009 as the Technical Manager for Spain and Portugal before transfering to Novus South East Asia Pacific where advanced to become Head of Technical Services for South East Asia and South Asia Pacific. Prof Korver received a PhD from the University of California, Davis. Professor Korver’s research program has a strong applied research focus; relevance to the poultry industry remains an important consideration in his approach to research. In addition to practical research on feedstuff quality and dietary supplement evaluation in poultry diets, his work focuses on nutrition-immune function interactions and bone biology in meat and egg-type poultry.

Dr De Leon is a poultry veterinarian with a strong background and knowledge in gut health and, at the same time, well-experienced in feed formulation, feed technology and milling. Born in the Philippines, his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree is from the College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Philippines, while his master’s degree is from Mississippi State University. He is responsible at Kemin for providing technical leadership and support for the Apac region while working closely with product managers, customer laboratory services and technical managers.

Dr (Jovic) Mapa is a private poultry consultant. He has been in the poultry practice for the past 29 years and has been consulting for various integrated farms, feed mills, and veterinary drug companies since 2006. His practice covers commercial layer and broiler, layer and broiler breeder management and animal health, hatchery operations, processing operations, epidemiology and biosecurity audits. He studied at the University of the Philippines at Los Baños and earned the degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1993 and also took up master’s in management in the same university. His corporate work experiences include San Miguel Foods Inc., McKey Foods Ltd and Novartis Animal Health Philippines.
