Layer feed tonnage down 1.4%, but broiler up 2.3%

Global layer feed production tumbled 1.4% while broiler feed production rose 2.3% in 2021, Alltech said in its 2022 Agri-Food Outlook. The layer business has been facing challenges because of high raw material costs combined with flat/low retail prices for eggs. Animal welfare is also a driver, as cage-free and free-range production is growing. Asia Pacific saw a decrease in layer feed tonnage. Meanwhile, increased demand for easy-to-cook proteins and an affordable protein option aided the broiler sector. China and India accounted for significant increases in Asia Pacific.
