Poultry vaccines are vulnerable and can easily be destroyed during the mixing and handling process, said Chris Fritts, Boehringer Ingelheim’s Head of Global Vaccination Technologies & Services in a webinar.
Therefore, according to Dr Fritts, the success of a good vaccination program is highly dependent upon good vaccination technique.
Being specific on cocci vaccination techniques, Dr Fritts shared important tips. “Don’t use tap water. Use distilled or non-chlorinated water to mix cocci vaccine. And when mixing the vaccine, always wear personal protective equipment. Keep the vaccine mixture agitated during the entire vaccination process. This keeps the vaccine oocysts well mixed in the vaccine solution,” she said.
And then, “never allow the cocci vaccine to freeze. Freezing temperature may damage the oocysts in the vaccine. Store at 2-7 degrees C and keep a thermometer in refrigerator to monitor vaccine storage temperature,” Dr Fritts added.
