Philippines expands market for lower-tariff pork imports

The Philippine Department of Agriculture has expanded market coverage of pork imported under lower tariffs “to areas with relatively high prices of pork meat,” as well as processors and institutional buyers. The order took effect on October 25. Agriculture Secretary William Dar justified the decision saying “there is considerable deficit in pork supply locally” and “low utilization of the Pork MAV plus due to the strict market restrictions and distribution.” The original order only allowed the sale and distribution of pork under MAV plus in Metro Manila and surrounding provinces.
