Philippine layer duck breed boosts egg production

A locally developed breed of layer ducks is helping Philippine duck egg farmers boost production. The Itik Pinas (IP) Kayumanggi, developed under a 10-year breeding program by the Bureau of Animal Industry and later the Department of Science and Technology, can produce up to 250 eggs per year. Dr Angel Lambio, Professor Emeritus from the Institute of Animal Science at the University of the Philippines-Los Baños, said that the breed was developed in response to the need of local producers, who for a long time have suffered from inbreeding of stocks.
