Punjab proposes to turn paddy straw into fodder

The Punjab state government in India is proposing to use paddy straw to prepare cattle feed. The state generates about 20mt of straw annually. Considered waste, the straw is burnt in fields, causing air pollution. But research on the material shows that properly processed as fodder, it can provide close to 1mt of crude protein, 3mt of digestible crude protein, 8mt of total digestible nutrients and phosphorous. However, this fodder must be treated to remove toxic elements before use.
